It took nearly 102 minutes for Therese Romero to break through for Fort Lewis College in the season opener.
She did it nearly 100 minutes faster Sunday.
Romero tallied just 2 minutes, 28 seconds into the game, and Emma Cannis added a late insurance tally as the FLC women’s soccer team beat Midwestern State 2-0 on Sunday in Grand Junction.
“I think in general, a better game for us all the way around,” FLC head coach Damian Clarke said.
Romero, a senior midfielder, scored just two goals all of last season. This year, she has two in the first two games after denting the twine Sunday off an assist from Jordan Hix.
“We’re fortunate in the fact that we’ve got four really good central midfielders,” Clarke said. “(Romero is) putting things on frame, and she hits the ball well.”
Hix would get into the mix again on Cannis’ goal in the 84th minute as the freshman assisted on the senior striker’s first goal of the season.
“Jordan’s athleticism is special,” Clarke said. “She gets up and down the field unlike any player we’ve had in a long time.”
Caitlyn Espinosa made three saves for her second clean sheet in as many games this season, and the Skyhawks outshot Midwestern State 16-4, including an 8-3 edge in shots on goal.
The Skyhawks (2-0-0) will head to Texas next weekend, starting with a game at Angelo State at 5 p.m. Friday in San Angelo, Texas.
