100 years ago: “A movement for the beautifying of Durango by the planting of home gardens received strong impetus, when the committee of home gardens met to discuss plans for encouraging all classes in the planting of home gardens.”
75 years ago: “Christmas baskets packed with food, clothing, candy and toys by the PEO, the Elks, American Legion Auxiliary and the Beta Sigma Pi Sorority have been distributed this week to families which could use the baskets and their contents.”
50 years ago: “Durangoans awoke this morning, those who got up at their usual time in spite of electric alarm clocks in many parts of the city taking a siesta about 4:30 a.m., to find more of the heavy, soaky wet stuff about. Officially, the snowfall was called 4 inches since noon Wednesday, but it went easily over 10-inch boots, somehow. It contained nearly an inch and a half of water.”
25 years ago: “Plummeting temperatures wreaked havoc on vehicles and water pipes in the Durango area as the thermometer dipped well below zero. The low in Durango was 24 degrees below zero, breaking the Christmas Eve record low of minus-12 in 1924.”
