For the second year, there will be live music at the upcoming La Plata County Fair. And this year’s performer comes with a pretty serious résumé.
Soul country singer Sundance Head, who won the television singing competition “The Voice” in 2016, and who was on “American Idol” in 2007, will be taking the stage with special guests The Cannondolls on Aug. 10.
The singer said the music genre “soul country” was a category tailored for the music he and his band play.
“When we were starting back in Texas, we didn’t really fit the narrative for red-dirt country or traditional country or Texas country, so in order for us to be able to get work and be on the radio, you had to classify yourself as something. So my wife actually came up with ‘soul country’ – that’s how we got the name,” he said. “You have to make a genre ... they want to know what kind of music you play and how you describe yourself.”
He said the genre has stuck and has grown in popularity.
“Now, we have friends of ours back home, a few people who actually consider themselves soul country, so it’s pretty flattering,” he said.
It’s a style of music that encompasses a range of music, Head said.
“It’s like classic rock, I guess, R&B, Gulf Coast sound, mixed with ’70s country. I like George Jones a lot,” he said.
The Texas native said competing on “The Voice” – he chose Blake Shelton to be his coach – was a great experience, with the only downside being the time he was away from his family. He said from start to finish, the show took about a year for those competitors who made it to the end.
After the show, he hit the road with Shelton, doing 13 dates in about a month.
“We had a great time doing that. I was fortunate enough to stick around long enough to learn a lot of stuff from the producers there and Blake,” Head said. “After that, we went on tour with Blake; I did an arena tour with him. It was a great experience for me.
“It was a lot of fun. We learned a lot hanging out with those guys. And we made a lot of great contacts, too.”
