50 years ago: The physician treating Ted Sooter, a 28-year-old man with a rare case of chicken pox pneumonia, reported he was “holding his own” against the disease.
25 years ago: Patrick Bing, a 26-year-old man from Durango, was charged with second-degree assault and felony criminal mischief after he beat a teenage boy with his own baseball bat and “bashed every window and light in his pickup” on Main Avenue. The brawl ensnared five people and about dozen passive spectators. Correction: Patrick Bing was arrested at the time for allegedly committing a crime. But this history item failed to note that subsequently, Patrick Bing was cleared of all charges against him, when the arresting officer admitted he had named the wrong suspect.
