100 years ago: “To line La Plata County up with the other metal-mining counties of the state of Colorado, Metal Mining Association recently formed in Denver. La Plata County is the only county not in the association.”
75 years ago: “As has been its custom for a number of years, the Herald-Democrat will observe Memorial Day by closing shop and giving its force a holiday. There will be no paper published that day.”
50 years ago: This appeared in the section titled Junior High Jottings: “Amy Ball had a party at her new home near Bondad. Guests wore cutoffs and sweatshirts for the most part. Everybody took turns riding the horse, had straw fights, sang folk songs, ate and drank refreshments, danced and had a marvelous time!”
25 years ago: “For the first time in three decades, there will be no American Legion fireworks at the fairgrounds July 4. Instead, Durango Pro Rodeo will have use of the arena that night. A year ago, the La Plata County Fairgrounds Commission informed the American Legion of the conflict and urged the group to work with the rodeo. But miscommunication between the groups has left the American Legion with no fireworks to shoot and too short a time to order by Independence Day.”
