DENVER – A police officer in Colorado has fatally shot a driver and injured a passenger while being dragged by the stolen vehicle in Pueblo, authorities said.
The Pueblo Police Department has said the officer, who was not identified, attempted to stop the stolen sedan Friday around 2 a.m. before making contact with the suspects inside the car, the Denver Post reported.
“While the details of the incident are still under investigation, at some point, the officer was dragged by the stolen vehicle as he contacted the suspects,” the department said in a statement.
The officer fired his handgun, striking both the driver and the passenger, police said. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene and the passenger was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The officer suffered minor injuries during the encounter.
The 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Team has launched an investigation into the officer-involved shooting.
