11 in a row for IHS boys

The biggest challenger to the Ignacio High School boys basketball team’s San Juan League crown failed Saturday in Ouray.

Class 2A No. 3 IHS beat Class 1A No. 8 Ouray 66-49 to extend its winning streak to 11 games.

The Bobcats only led 28-26 at halftime before a deluge of 3-pointers gave them a cushion. IHS (12-2, 8-0 SJL) hit six of its eight 3s after halftime to pull away.

“They played a real stretch zone. We weren’t stepping to the ball,” IHS head coach Chris Valdez said of the first half. “We just came out in the second half, and things started falling.”

Senior Adison Jones made four of those 3s on his way to a game-high 27 points. He bagged a double-double with 11 rebounds to go along with three assists and three blocks.

“Solid, solid game,” Valdez said.

Jones missed a game earlier in the year with a knee injury, but Valdez said it may have just been tendinitis, and they’re treating Jones like he’s back.

“We’re still cautious with him in practice, but he’s pretty much back as far as we’re concerned,” Valez said.

Wyatt Hayes also had a big game with 14 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and seven steals.

Tucker Ward scored 11 points, playing a key part in the second half.

“He hit a couple real key 3s in that second quarter to extend the lead,” Valdez said.

The Trojans had won three consecutive games prior to Saturday’s defeat.

The Bobcats next play at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Bayfield for the Pine River Rivalry.

“They look like they’ve been pretty tough, pounding it inside to that new freshman kid,” Valdez said of BHS and Ryan Phelps. “We’ve got some film on them from (Friday night). We’ll try to pressure their guards and prevent them from making easy passes.”
