1st win eluding Wolverine girls

Things didn't go too well for Bayfield at last weekend's Farmington Lady Scorpion Invitational in New Mexico. With two losses courtesy of a much-improved FHS squad last Thursday on Day 1 and perennial powerhouse Shiprock on Day 2, one can't say the Lady Wolverines were on a quest for cupcakes.

Struggling to score 20 points on the 5A Lady Scorps (now 6-2 overall) and then held to a harmless 12 by the 4A Lady Chieftains (now 6-3), BHS' best chance for success came on Day 3 against Monticello, Utah.

That number "12" came into play again, but right away and in a good way; Bayfield had the Buckaroos evenly battled, a dozen points each, through the opening eight minutes.

But without warning, the dreaded invisible cover was placed over the rim and the Wolverines managed but eight points during the next 24 minutes as MHS did just enough to win 32-20 and take third place.

Sophomore point guard Kyle Baker's five points paced BHS, and senior Jessie Roukema and sophomore Taylor Morris each scored four as Bayfield finished its pre-Christmas schedule 0-for-7. Baker led her team with six rebounds. Senior guard Andrea Zelinski scored 14 in the 37-point loss to Farmington, and Roukema accounted for the other six-all on free throws-as FHS outrebounded BHS 41-12 and made 25 total baskets to Bayfield's five. Shiprock allowed the Wolverines just two points in the first quarter en route to a 30-6 halftime lead and ultimately a 43-point margin of victory.
