2 Bobcats on podium

DENVER – No Ignacio High School wrestler ended his Colorado High School Activities Association Class 2A state tournament with a win Saturday at the Pepsi Center.

Iaasic Peña and Stocker Robbins reached the podium, and Ethan Appenzeller and Josh Gallegos were eliminated.

Robbins, a sophomore, lost 3-0 to Burlington’s Logan Durham in the third-place match at 113 pounds.

“I thought I wrestled alright. The chips fell where they fell,” said Robbins, son of Josh Robbins. “There was a lot of upsets. I got upset. It makes me hungry. There’s next year.”

That match followed two consecutive wins earlier in the day to stay alive, one coming in the ultimate period of sudden victory when Robbins didn’t let Sheridan Harvey of Meeker escape his hold for a point.

Peña also dealt with sudden victory, but it did not treat him nearly as well. He lost 2-0 to Eads’ Reagan Lane after a scoreless six minutes in the consolation semifinals. That dropped Peña into the fifth-place match, where he lost 7-0 to Salomon Chavez of Centauri.

“This being my first time, I’m just happy I placed,” said Peña, son of Kenneth and Shasta Peña. “Knowing it was my last match of the season and of my wrestling career, I was just trying to leave it all on the mat.”

Both Appenzeller and Gallegos dropped their first match of the day to fall out of the tournament. Holyoke’s Nick Ortner took a 9-2 decision over Appenzeller, and Gallegos lost 3-2 to Dylan Kelly to Ellicot.
