A 59-year-old woman from Ohio died in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 160 about two miles east of Bayfield shortly after 5 p.m. Sunday.
Colorado State Patrol Capt. Adrian Driscoll said the woman was a passenger in a Dodge Avenger that was side-swiped by an eastbound extended-cab Ford that was partially in the westbound lane.
The driver of the Avenger, whom Driscoll believed was the husband of the woman who was killed, was taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with broken ribs.
The cause and further details of the accident remain under investigation Driscoll said.
The two men in the Ford pickup are from the Pagosa Springs area, and both were taken to Mercy Regional Medical Center with minor injuries, Driscoll said.
Identities of the people involved in the accident were not released pending notification of their families, Driscoll said.
The main witness of the accident was driving a car that was hit by debris from the accident, and suffered minor injuries, Driscoll said.
Trooper Josh Lewis, the public information officer in Denver Sunday night, said the accident blocked U.S. Highway 160 in both directions “almost immediately” Lewis said. At 6:10 p.m. Sunday crews were able to open one lane on Highway 160 to alternating east-west traffic, but only one lane remained open as late as 9 p.m. Sunday, Lewis said.
