2 Durango events cover air, water quality issues

Updates provided Thursday

Durangoans seeking an update to local air and water quality will have their hands full Thursday with two separate events covering the topics.

From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Mountain Studies Institute will host an air quality forum at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio. Three panelists: Rob Milofsky of Fort Lewis College, Kelly Palmer of the U.S. Forest Service, and Joanna Casey, of the University of Colorado at Boulder, will talk about air quality trends in the Four Corners. The public will be able to ask questions. A cash bar will be available.

Then at 7 p.m., the San Juan Basin Health Department will host a community meeting at the Durango Public Library to provide an update on the health of the Animas River.

Though the department does not anticipate spring runoff to pose human health risks, officials want to educate people about the possible impacts of acid-mine runoff.
