Eufórquestra will be bringing its high-energy live show to Durango for two nights at the Animas City Theatre with Head For the Hills on Dec. 2.
We had a chance to talk with Mike Tallman, who plays guitar and sings in Eufórquestra.
Q: It seems like you guys tour a lot.
A: We do, absolutely. We go shorter and more often. There was a period when we used to go at it for longer tours all the time and, you know, the older we’ve gotten, we’ve found it works a little better for us to go out more often and in shorter spurts.
Q: You’ve been together for over a decade? Have a lot of members come and gone? Are you essentially the same core group?
A: It’s been a little over 13 years now. We’ve had quite a few that have come and gone. Mostly, I mean, we’ve had a lot of our original members that have settled down and started families and that kind of thing. And then there are some of us that are crazy enough to still keep trying to do it.
Q: You have an album set that’s nothing to sniff at – you’re on five albums? Six albums?
A: We’ve got four studio albums and one live record, and then we also ... right now, the mode that we’re in is, we’re working on doing more like a series of singles at the moment. So we put one out at the beginning of this year, and we’re just putting the finishing touches on the next one right now. I don’t know when exactly we’ll get that one released, but we put one out in either January or February, and we’ve got the next couple of tracks coming here soon.
Q: I’ve noticed that you’re putting them put on vinyl, too.
A: Yeah, we’ve done … the last full-length record we did press, and the single we put out at the beginning of the year, we pressed a seven-inch 45 as well, which is, I mean, it’s definitely a deliberate decision mostly because several of us, myself included, are vinyl junkies, and we really, really love the medium.
Q: There are worse things to hoard.
A: Exactly. There are worse, more expensive habits to have, right?
Q: For people who aren’t familiar with your sound, how would you describe it?
A: It’s eclectic, but the main thing is ... we just try to put energy out that makes people want to dance, you know? That’s the whole thing. We’re more of a live-performance band than anything. We really enjoy recording and making records, but what we’ve done primarily ... we’ve put out five records, but we’ve played a lot more shows than we’ve had albums. So the whole thing is just trying to put out a positive vibe that makes people want to dance, celebrate and all the other good things.
Q: When you get here, you’re doing two nights? What can Durango expect when you get here?
A: We’ve come to Durango many times; it’s been one of our favorite places to play for years and years. But this time, it’s a little different because as we were working on getting there, we realized that our friends Head for the Hills were trying to play Durango on the exact same dates. So we decided, ‘Well, let’s just team up and do it together.’ So it’s two nights with our friends Head for the Hills, who are a fantastic bluegrass band from the Front Range, and so we’re going to reverse the bill one night. We play first ... we’re still figuring out all the logistics, but I think we’re going to kind of tailor our Friday night set to be something that will work ... to do something a little more unique and different. And since those guys are good friends of ours, I imagine we’ll probably have some collaboration going on and that kind of thing throughout each night.
