What a beautiful time of year. Autumn always has a way of reawakening and refreshing my body, mind and soul.
Because summer seems to go by so fast, fall is ripe for slowing down and celebrating some of life’s joys. One of those joys is harvesting food from the land and sharing it with others.
La Plata County 4-H members would like to invite the community to the first 4-H Harvest Festival, which will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Old Fort Research Station in Hesperus. We will gather on the lawn outside the old library.
At the festival, we will have booths showcasing different 4-H projects. If you are considering joining 4-H this year or want to learn more about the program, it is a perfect opportunity to see what being a member is all about. In addition, old-fashioned outdoor games, arts and crafts and activities are being planned.
Furthermore, we will be showcasing the “4-H Giving Back Garden.” The garden, which is on the Old Fort incubator plots, will have potatoes, onions and cabbage to give away – yes, free, healthy, local produce to take back to your kitchens. We will offer a potato and onion soup to taste as well.
The garden project was entered into a statewide 4-H/FFA contest known as “Come Alive Outside.” We are a finalist in this challenge and will be finishing strong with this great outdoor event.

Parliamentarian, Cabree Mullins of the Mountain Shadows 4-H Club in Hesperus.
Stephenie Riegel and Iain McCourt will represent La Plata County on the state 4-H level as state senators.
This year’s County Council has a great representation from across our entire county. We have Bobcats, Wolverines and Demons all on the same 4-H team. It is really great to see these young people work together throughout the year to better their communities. They will act as ambassadors for our program. They are responsible for running business meetings, planning and organizing leadership and community service events, as well as mentoring younger 4-H members.
The council already is planning to collaborate with the Celebrating Healthy Communities Coalition for the Snowdown obstacle course at Buckley Park. This event is family friendly and a great team/community building project for all.
