4 small fires started Friday along Goeglein Gulch Road in Durango

Juvenile arrested Friday in connection with blazes

A juvenile was arrested Friday on suspicion of starting four small wildfires along a powerline that runs next to Goeglein Gulch Road.

Durango Police Chief Kamran Afzal said a city employee in the area witnessed someone starting the fires.

Karola Hanks, fire marshal with the Durango Fire Protection District, said: “We got an early call on it, and crews were really fast and early to jump on it.”

Three small fires essentially self-extinguished, Hanks said. A fourth fire in the 400 block of Goeglein Gulch Road required some chainsaw work and some water to douse, she said.

Afzal said a detective arrested a juvenile in the area between the 300 and 1000 blocks of Goeglein Gulch Road – the area where the fires were burning.

Anyone who witnessed the fires or has information about the fires can call Detective Chris Thomson at 375-4732.
