5th-grade Demons lift YAFL teams

Durango goes 1-5 in a tough week; one team, however, wins big

It was a tough week for the local Youth American Football League teams.

The fifth-grade Durango Demons, however, are immune to tough weeks.

After back-to-back bye weeks, these Demons showed little rust against the Montezuma Titans on Saturday in Cortez. Durango defeated Montezuma 46-6 to improve to 4-0 on the season.

The other four Demons’ football teams went 0-4:

The Farmington Sting defeated the second-grade Demons 28-7. Tyler Harms scored the Demons’ lone touchdown.

Durango (0-4) next will play Bayfield at 11 a.m. Saturday in Farmington.

The Montezuma Titans defeated the third-grade Demons 7-6. Beau Brunson rushed for the Demons’ only touchdown.

Durango (3-3) next will host Bayfield at 11 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School in the Demons’ regular-season finale.

The Bloomfield Bobcats defeated the fourth-grade Demons 13-7 in overtime. Jake Swift rushed for the Demons’ only touchdown; Swift added the extra point, too.

Durango (2-4) next will host Aztec at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School in the Demons’ regular-season finale.

The fifth-grade Demons defeated the Montezuma Titans Black by 40, and the points against were the first scored on the undefeated Durango team this season.

Jordan Woolverton rushed for three first-quarter touchdowns – from 1, 40 and 47 yards out. Woolverton added an 11-yard touchdown pass to Niko Mestas in the second quarter, while Gage Mestas converted the extra point.

Gage Mestas had a 9-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, while Haezen Mestas scored the extra point to push the Demons’ lead to 34-6 at the half.

Ty Martinez scored on a 17-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Haezen Mestas scored on a 3-yard run to give the Demons their 46-6 final.

Killian Gwinn and Kyler Reimers led the Demons’ defense with four tackles each, and Derek Carman and Gage Mestas each recovered first-quarter fumbles.

Durango (4-0) next will host Aztec at 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.

The Aztec Tigers defeated the sixth-grade Demons Red 13-0 on Saturday in Aztec, while the Farmington Coyotes defeated the sixth-grade Demons White 25-12 on Saturday in Durango.

The Demons Red (2-4) next will host Bayfield at 9 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School in their regular-season finale, while the Demons White (4-2) next will play Farmington at 1 p.m. Saturday in Farmington in their regular-season finale.
