691 lose power Sunday in Durango

Bird may have lost tail feathers

For the second time this weekend, an animal got tangled up in electrical equipment, but this time fewer than 700 county residents lost power, and the animal – possibly a raptor – may have only lost its tail feathers.

“It was a bird, somewhere in the Ute Pass Road area just off of Florida,” said La Plata Electric Association spokeswoman Indian Reed. “It was 691 customers, including me, for 50 minutes. “

Reed said the outage began around 4:20 p.m. Sunday but power was restored by 5:10.

“They found it quickly and got it back on quickly, so that was nice,” she said.

If indeed it was a bird of prey, law requires that Colorado Parks and Wildlife be notified when raptors are injured, and only professional wildlife rehabilatators are allowed to take possession and provide rehabilitation, if possible, to the animal.
