6th-grade Demons roll to a 2-0 YAFL start

It was all offense in the first half.

And that offense was backed by defense in the second half.

After it was all said and done, the sixth-grade Durango Demons improved to 2-0 on the Youth American Football League season with a 41-0 rout over the Farmington Wolfpack on Saturday at Miller Middle School.

Jordan Woolverton ran for one and threw for two touchdowns and an extra point in the first half for a 19-0 lead. He hooked up with Solomon Gabel for a 27-yard touchdown pass, then scored on a 1-yard keeper and passed to Niko Mestas for the extra point. He hit Gage Mestas on a short pass, then Mestas scored from 12 yards out to cap the first-half scoring.

The Demons started the second half with a safety, then Woolverton returned the ensuing kickoff 33 yards for a touchdown.

Alex Pavon recovered a fumble, then Gage Mestas scored from 35 yards out; Woolverton scrambled for the extra point and the 34-0 lead.

Pavon then scored his first touchdown of the season from 7 yards out, while Demetrius Trujillo scored the extra point for the final margin of victory.

Pavon and Kyler Reimers led the Demons’ defense, which had 17 different players in on tackles.

Durango will play the Farmington Duck at 11 a.m. Saturday in Farmington.

Though the game had to be moved because of scheduling conflicts, Bloomfield retained its home-field advantage against the fifth-grade Durango Demons.

Bloomfield beat the Demons (1-1) 13-0 on Saturday in Durango.

Bloomfield took the lead with a 5-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter and led 6-0 at halftime.

The Bobcats scored again in the second half after recovering a Durango fumble on a botched snap from a punt attempt, and Bloomfield capitalized on the short field with a touchdown and an extra point for the final margin of victory.

Nate Messier had a sack for the Demons, while Lincoln Clay, Matt Pane and Jordan Stanley had several tackles in the defensive affair between teams that reached last season’s semifinals. Bloomfield lost the championship game a year ago.

The Demons will return to the field at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bayfield.
