Wow, there are already over 450 Expressions of Interest for the new Ascent Classical Academy charter school that parents want to open in 9-R! These parents want a back-to-basics, traditional curriculum, something not currently available in all of our school choices.
But the Durango School District 9-R school board and administration have denied allowing Ascent to have an out-of-cycle (early review) for this school’s application, and an early application review is 100% necessary in order to get this school opened in 2023.
If my memory serves me correctly, didn’t 9-R work closely with Juniper charter school and grant consideration for its out-of-cycle application, as well as give them a construction loan?
If the 9-R board will not grant an early application review, then the parents of 9-R are urging the board and administration to allow Ascent Classical Academy to authorize directly through the state chartering authority (Charter School Institute). Parents also want “the best academic success and proficiency outcome for our schools, students and staff” – as stated in the Durango 9-R Board of Education Resolution.
The board will be voting on this authorization request at the next board meeting on Jan. 25. Please, let’s get the ball rolling to get options, good options for all of our kids here in Durango.
