A dreary Round 1 for Durango girls tennis

After rain delay, competition rains on Demons

What started off as a gloomy day ended that way, too.

The Durango High School girls tennis team lost both of its Round 1 matches at the CHSAA Class 4A Girls State Tennis Tournament on Thursday in Pueblo but only after waiting out a rain delay that pushed the Class 4A start from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

At No. 2 singles, freshman Sarah Harrelson lost to defending state champion Payton Fielding of Cheyenne Mountain 6-0, 6-2.

“She’s really good,” first-year DHS head coach Laura Ehlers said of Fielding. “You know what though, Sarah looked really good. She was just totally outplayed.”

No. 1 doubles team Kit Hackett and Meredith Nass lost 6-2, 6-0 to Kaylee Pott and Annie Hertel of Valor Christian.

All three will wait and see how their first-round opponents fair in Round 2, hoping to make the playback bracket.
