Adams State shocks No. 16 FLC

After 98 scoreless minutes, the Fort Lewis College men’s soccer team looked like it finally had found a winner in overtime against Adams State on Wednesday at Dirks Field.

The linesman’s offsides flag said otherwise.

Grizzlies’ midfielder Fabian Omana-Marin punched a high ball through the hands of FLC keeper Ryan Pakieser during the next passage of play to give Adams State (4-1-0, 2-0-0 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) a 1-0 victory, the Grizzlies’ first ever win over the Skyhawks (4-1-1, 1-1-0 RMAC).

FLC previously played Adams State on Sunday and held a 1-0 lead before lightning canceled the game seven minutes before it became official.

“It’s unfortunate that we had to replay the game, but I think our guys played well enough (Wednesday) to win the game and probably should have gotten the result,” FLC head coach Oige Kennedy said.

The Skyhawks outshot Adams State 18-7 and 11-1 in the second half.

Adams State goalie Jared Wilson made nine saves, including stopping a free kick as time expired that would have snatched a late winner for FLC, which was ranked 16th in this week’s Division II coaches poll.

“He was probably their best player; I think he made some great saves,” Kennedy said. “I think the fact that he was as busy as he was showed how dominant we were in our attack but just couldn’t get it in the goal.”

FLC played without four regular starters because of injuries, including captain Johannes Sander and goalie Ryan Schaul.

It was the first time the Skyhawks had been shut out this season and their first game without a goal since a 4-0 defeat at CSU-Pueblo in late October last season, and FLC lost its first match of the year after picking up points in its first five games.
