A formidable foe beats BHS volleyball

Wolverines have three losses this season, two to Class 4A N.M. Piedra Vista

As steel sharpens steel, playing a great team improves yours.

At least that’s what Bayfield High School volleyball coach Terene Foutz is planning on after a 3-2 (23-25, 25-13, 25-20, 22-25, 15-13) loss Thursday at Piedra Vista in Farmington.

The Wolverines battled back from a 2-1 hole to force a decisive fifth set, but they couldn’t finish the comeback.

“It was really a great battle of serve vs. serve-receive,” Foutz said. “We got stuck in one rotation and couldn’t get out of it.”

Kirstie Hillyer led BHS (12-3) with 16 kills on a .281 hitting percentage, while Suzie Rhodes had 30 assists and Maddi Foutz 28 digs.

The Wolverines made 12 blocks as a team.

The loss snaps the Wolverines’ six-match winning streak. BHS also lost to Piedra Vista (11-2) 3-2 Sept. 10 in Bayfield.

Still, Foutz was glad for the competition from the New Mexico Class 4A school, as the Wolverines – ranked fifth in Class 3A by CHSAAnow.com – hadn’t lost a set since Sept. 19.

“I couldn’t be happier about it,” she said of the match. “We’re better for having played them (Thursday night).”

The Wolverines will return to Intermountain League play Saturday at Centauri.
