Valentine’s Day is a nationwide holiday in which flowers are bought, lips are kissed and chocolate is consumed. For others, it’s a great day to remember how single you actually are. Either way, chocolate is consumed. This is a guide for Valentine’s Day 2016. There is no such thing as over-preparing for the most overrated day of the year.
For couples: Don’t go overboard. Valentine’s Day is a time to show your affection for one another, but every day should be like this. You can never go wrong with flowers and chocolate, but try something out of the box. Write a love song/poem, for instance. Your significant other will definitely appreciate the effort. If you’re not the artistic type, go on an afternoon picnic or stargaze. Being in nature is one of the most romantic things to do on Valentine’s Day.
For singles: Appreciate the things you have that would be jeopardized if you were dating someone. For example, you don’t have to report to anyone or worry about how you look. Always keep in mind that no matter how cliched it is, there is always someone out there. Enjoy Valentine’s Day doing a family activity – maybe a hike or bike ride. Spend the day with the people you love and who love you.
For parents: Take a step back from your kids, especially the ones in a relationship. You have to remember when you were that age. Young love can be something special, so find the balance with your involvement After all, you’re only young once.
For grandchildren: Make sure to send your grandparents a card telling them how much you appreciate them. It may seem a little out of place on Valentine’s Day, but your grandparents will definitely appreciate the thought.
For everyone: Make a homemade card for someone. First of all, cards in the store can cost as much as $10. Handmade cards are free and come straight from the heart. There is something about handwriting that is way more personal and affectionate then premade print, and once you add some hearts and smiley faces, you have a low cost, heartfelt gift.
Also for everyone: Watch a movie about love. Chick flicks may not be your style but don’t be afraid to bear one out. You may find out you like it in the end. Sometimes there is something heartwarming about watching two people overcome the odds to be in love ... but only sometimes.
Also for everyone: Make some baked goods with family or friends. There is nothing that screams coziness more than warm cookies or a cake. They don’t necessarily have to be Valentine’s Day themed, but bonus points if they are. Extra bonus points if you add a personal touch for your loved one.
Valentine’s Day is a time of affection. Although every day should be a special one, Feb. 14 is set aside to recognize whom you love. There are 364 more days until it comes again, but it’s never too early to prepare.
