A ‘Jeopardy!’ question we can all answer ...

Rod Barker, right, owner of the Strater Hotel, shows off room 222, the Louis L’Amour Room, where the author often stayed. At left are Paula Wiseman and Wayne Bedor of the Friends of the Durango Public Library.

Local aficionados of the trivia game show “Jeopardy!” were leaping up from their couches on Thursday when host Alex Trebek read an answer in the Literary Landmarks category.

Trebek’s answer? “Louis L’Amour wrote many of his Western novels in room 222 of the Strater Hotel in Durango in this state.”

The response, a $1,600 value in the Double Jeopardy round, was, of course, our own Rocky Mountain state, or, in Jeopardese, “What is Colorado?” It was well-known Western author L’Amour who said the honky-tonk music rising from the Diamond Belle Saloon downstairs provided inspiration for some of his bestsellers.

Room 222 was designated a Literary Landmark by the American Library Association in 2012 after members of the Friends of the Durango Public Library nominated it for the honor.
