A limited opportunity slips from Bayfield

Wolverines lose dual they could have won

A lack of preparation squandered the Bayfield High School wrestling team’s chance for a dual win Thursday at Monte Vista.

The Wolverines lost 42-35 in one of the few duals they’ve had an opportunity to win because of their lack of numbers.

“It’s a disappointment when you get the opportunity and don’t seize that opportunity,” BHS head coach Todd McMenimen said.

Both teams began the match receiving two forfeits, so it was tied at 12 when the actual wrestling started.

Sam Westbrook opened with a first period pin at heavyweight for the Wolverines.

Garrett Beebe won by technical fall at 106 pounds to push Bayfield’s lead to 23-12.

Then the trouble started.

Bayfield’s 113-pound wrestler didn’t make weight, so the Wolverines forfeited that weight class.

“That’s something we can control, but we didn’t do it,” McMenimen said. “Some of that’s needing to grow up and needing to understand that.”

Cody Speece was pinned in the third period at 120 for BHS.

“We didn’t wrestle the way we should have,” McMenimen said.

The Wolverines gave up a forfeit at 126 pounds, and Taylor Winch was pinned in the first period at 123 pounds. Jake Jensen was pinned at 138 pounds to stretch Monte Vista’s lead to 42-23.

Colter McMenimen and Cash Snooks closed the dual strong for BHS with pins in the second period at 145 pounds and 152 pounds, respectively.

It was too late to make up the deficit at that point, though.

“Definitely a dual we should have won,” Todd McMenimen said. “We’ve gotta do a good job next week showing up, getting off the buss ready to wrestle, because we were not ready to wrestle.”

The Wolverines will travel Saturday to Salida to compete in a tournament.
