On a recent morning, I was on the river trail for an enjoyable morning walk with my dog. As usual, there were many pedestrians, dog walkers and bike riders.
I want to thank the courteous bike riders who ring their bell, or speak out, “On your left,” or slow down as they approach a pedestrian. One particularly kind rider slowed to an almost complete stop as we both crossed the bridge behind the high school. After thanking him, he said with a smile, “No problem, I’m not in a hurry.”
He made my day, and helped to soften the anger I felt just five minutes earlier. That anger was directed at the woman riding south on the trail behind the high school at 9:30 a.m. My dog and I were headed north, approaching a woman walking south. The bike rider was southbound, with a cup in one hand. As the other pedestrian and I passed each other, the woman on the bike didn’t bother to announce her approach from behind, and proceeded to ride between us so that there were three people, one moving bike and one dog abreast on the trail. To say she startled the other pedestrian and angered me is an understatement.
Keeping my anger in check, I yelled “Slow down!” She responded with an “F-bomb” and then called me an obscene name.
If you are too important, in a hurry or just plain rude, ride on Main Avenue and take your chances with the big guys. Parks and Rec, please step up and make the trail safe!
