A much-needed win hangs in the girls balance

Both girls basketball teams could use a win when Bayfield High School and Ignacio High School meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Ignacio.

The Wolverines have lost their last three games and five out of six to fall into last place in the Intermountain League.

The Bobcats snapped a four-game losing streak in their last game Jan. 30 against Dolores. They had two games cancelled over the weekend because of road conditions and haven’t played in almost two weeks.

“It is what it is. I try not to play too much into it,” IHS head coach Shane Seibel said Saturday night when they were scheduled to host Ouray. “It happened for a reason.”

IHS (3-10) leaned on a strong defensive effort and 25 points from Cloe Seibel to get over the hump against Dolores in its last game.

Seibel leads the Bobcats in scoring at 8.5 points per game and in rebounding at 6.4 boards per game.

Gabriella Garcia averages 8.3 points per game.

The Bobcats average 9.6 steals per game as a team while shooting 31 percent from the field.

They’ll have to match up with the BHS (6-10) senior duo of Haley Clarke and Jaida Ross; the latter paces the Wolverines’ offense with 13.1 points and 9.4 rebounds per game, while the former scores 7.6 points per contest and provides an outside shooting threat to complement Ross’ power inside game.

“Our key is going to be our defensive rebounding, offensive rebounding and playing the best defense possible,” Seibel said. “That’ll be our game plan.”

Last season’s 49-46 win by the Bobcats snapped a six-game losing streak against the Wolverines for IHS.

“I’m excited. I think with Bayfield and Ignacio there’s a long history of great games,” Seibel said. “I’m excited for the seniors to play their last game against Bayfield at home. It’s going to be electric.”
