‘A night for Nepal’

Wednesday would be a splendid evening to dine out. Not only is Durango home to a number of fine eateries, but also a series of them have designated May 13 as “A Night for Nepal” to help that nation’s earthquake recovery efforts.

The Himalayan Kitchen restaurant will host a dinner, cash bar and live music from 6 to 9 p.m. for a minimum donation of $35 per person.

In addition, the Ore House, East by Southwest, Nini’s Taqueria, Ska Brewing Co., Mahogany Grill, BREW Pub & Kitchen, Gazpacho, Yardbird Eatery, The Red Snapper and Mutu’s Italian Kitchen will donate 10 percent of Wednesday’s proceeds to the nonprofit Karma and Jyamu Bhotia Foundation.

Karma and Jyamu Bhotia, Nepal natives, own the Himalayan. The foundation, which has an all-volunteer, unpaid staff, will forward the money to Nepal to help with rebuilding. For more information or to donate, see http://bhotiafoundation.org.

There are other ways to help, too.

Animas Trading – is donating 10 percent of its proceeds from May 13 to the foundation.

Or visit the website of the dZi Foundation of Ridgway – www.dzi.org/donate#join. Select an amount to donate to Nepal, type “Osprey” in the comment box and Osprey Packs of Cortez will match up to $5,000 in total contributions through May 31,

Finally, there is a relief fund set up at the Bank of the San Juans. Any of the bank’s locations can accept donations to aid the families of the local Nepalese community. And that need not wait until Wednesday.
