Opinion Editorial Cartoons Op-Ed Editorials Letters to the Editor

A note about our editorials

Dear Herald readers,

In the coming weeks, the space traditionally devoted to the newspaper’s editorial will include commentary by three Durangoans who will bring a wide breadth of interests and perspectives to the page.

Dick White is an academic who cares deeply for the Durango community and finds public service “incredibly rewarding.”

Jim Cross is a professor emeritus of exercise science at Fort Lewis College. He has been a resident since 1988 and can be found rowing Lake Nighthorse, discussing the qualities of various scotches and commenting on sports and recreation.

Bill Roberts is well remembered by Durango Herald readers as its opinion page editor for many years, who had a close but disciplined relationship with letter writers. His insightful and smoothly written editorials won awards.

When each contributes, their name will be upper left. If there is no name, it’s a topic and position taken by the editorial board. You read Cross’ reminiscence on simplicity in yesterday’s Herald.

Hollis Walker, who held the position of opinion editor for the past year and who wrote well-researched commentary, has returned to New Mexico. A search is underway for her successor.

In the meantime, look for contributions from White, Cross and Roberts along with unsigned institutional positions.
