A pair of Demons remain undefeated

Durango second- and sixth-grade Demons both improve to 3-0

In a battle of undefeated programs, the sixth-grade Durango Demons “won a hard-fought battle” by 27 points, according to Youth American Football League coach Ryan Woolverton in his weekly emails to The Durango Herald.

Durango improved to 3-0 with a 33-6 victory.

Gage Mestas returned the opening kickoff 64 yards for a touchdown, and Haezen Mestas added the extra point on the ground to set the tone.

Pagosa Springs quickly answered with a 55-yard touchdown but missed the extra point and trailed by one early.

Demons’ quarterback Jordan Woolverton answered with a 54-yard quarterback sweep for a touchdown, and Cal Walsh added the extra point for a 14-6 lead.

Gage Mestas scored again with a 40-yard touchdown run, and Walsh’s second extra point gave the Demons a 21-6 lead in the first quarter.

“After a back and forth second quarter,” coach Woolverton said, Jordan Woolverton scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak and a 27-6 halftime advantage.

Woolverton and Solomon Gabel hooked up on a 7-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-goal for the Demons’ final points.

“The Demons’ defense was stingy after the first quarter, forcing three turnovers,” coach Woolverton said in the email.

Ty Martinez had seven tackles, and Demetrius Trujillo had an interception.

Durango will host Bayfield at 9 a.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.

The fifth-grade Demons shut out the Farmington Bandits 26-0.

Jake Swift started the scoring with a 50-yard touchdown run.

Douglas Malcom hit Sam Greco from 5 yards out for the Demons’ second touchdown of the half.

Nate Messier scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and Malcom and Greco hooked up for the extra point.

Chase Robertson shook a pair of Farmington defenders in the backfield and ran 65 yards for a touchdown and the Demons’ final score in their shutout.

Durango (2-2) will play the Farmington Scorpions at 1 p.m. Saturday in Farmington.

Up 13-12 late in the fourth quarter, the fourth-grade Durango Demons lost 18-13 to the Pagosa Springs Pirates on the Pirates’ late touchdown.

Durango will host the Aztec Apes at 1 p.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.

The third-grade Durango Demons lost 13-7 to the Bloomfield Bobcats.

Brett Hamer recovered a fumble, and Tyler Harms converted the turnover to points with a 30-yard touchdown run for the Demons’ lone score. Tanner Anderson scored the Demons’ extra point.

Connor McCrosky and Cage Soules led the Demons’ defense in defeat.

Durango will play Shiprock at 1 p.m. in Farmington.

The second-grade Durango Demons improved to 3-0 with a 20-0 shutout over the Farmington Scorpions.

Cole Pontine led the Demons with 57 yards rushing, two touchdowns and an extra point in the victory.

Linkin Griego also scored a touchdown.

Cully Feeney led the Demons’ defense with three tackles, while Wyatt Bartel and Connor Jones each had fumble recoveries.

Durango will host Bayfield at 3 p.m. Saturday at Miller Middle School.
