A real definition of patriotism for July 4th

Another Fourth of July is here and our “patriotism” will proudly be on display.

Patriotism, however, is not just about wearing flag pins, jingoistic bumper stickers, dutifully reciting the Pledge, singing the national anthem and, of course, fireworks. Patriotism involves knowing the history of our country, understanding the Constitution, honoring the words of the Declaration of Independence, researching every candidate based on platform rather than personality and carefully evaluating both sides of an issue.

Patriotism also involves an individual’s ongoing effort to be a thoughtful and productive citizen, always working for the common good. As Adlai Stevenson eloquently stated, “Patriotism ... means a national sense of responsibility ... which is not short frenzied outbursts of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime.”

So, proudly wave that flag, sing that song and slap on that bumper sticker. But take the time to understand the institutions, the history and the true meaning of citizenship behind these symbols.

Happy Fourth of July!
