A small BHS squad runs well in Pagosa Springs

Trevor Gabbard opts for rest with a pair of big meets looming

Injuries and rest forced the Bayfield Cross Country team to only bring seven athletes to the Pagosa Springs Cross Country Classic.

BHS sophomore Lexa Fleming paced the girls team in ninth place with a time of 25 minutes, 30 seconds.

Rachel Cooper was 11th in 25:37, and Amber Johnson finished the race in 28:10 for the Wolverines.

Alex Knight paced the BHS boys team in 25th place.

Bryan Gram, Justice Herrera and Joey Sandrey “all had good races on this challenging course,” BHS head coach Josh Walton wrote in an email to The Durango Herald.

Full results weren’t immediately available.

Bayfield’s leading runner, Trevor Gabbard, didn’t run Saturday to rest for two big meets coming up in Grand Junction and Phoenix before regionals.

The Wolverines next will split the squad Saturday, sending runners to the Anna Banana in Fruita and the Chicken Creek Challenge in Mancos.
