The wind continued to wreak havoc on the Southwestern League Championship on Tuesday at Conquistador Golf Club in Cortez.

That didn’t stop a talented final foursome from tallying rounds in the high 70s and low 80s.

“When it’s blowing pretty steady – 35 to 40 mph – it’s tough,” Durango High School girls golf head coach Kirk Rawles said. “It was dusty and blowing sideways.”And, Rawles said, it was blowing even harder than Day 1 of the Southwestern League Championship on Monday at Hillcrest Golf Club.“I was super impressed,” he said of the quality of golf from the final foursome and the Demons. Taylor Walters of Rifle fired a 76 to medal at Conquistador. Brooke Raney of Aztec shot a 77 to finish runner-up.

Kala Keltz of Montrose shot an 81 and finished with a two-day total of 158 to win the Southwestern League Championship.

Kiselya Plewe of Dolores, who was Monday’s medalist after winning a tiebreaker against Keltz, finished one stroke back of Keltz to finish second at the Southwestern League Championship. With two first-place finishes in as many days, Montrose was crowned league champion with 509 points, ahead of Grand Junction Central (546) and Grand Junction (557). Durango finished fourth out of eight teams with 575 points.Natalie Lyon shaved 11 strokes off Monday’s 99 to finish with a DHS-best 88 on Tuesday, her third round this year in the 80s. Reiley Waldo took 12 strokes off her 103 on Monday with a 92.

Brooke Kniffin, the Demons’ leader at their home invitational, shot a 99 to keep her streak alive; she’s scored under 100 in every tournament this season.

Haleigh Lyon shot a 102, and Amanda Rydiger shot a 117 for the Demons.

“It was a pretty fun two-day tournament,” Rawles said.
