I received with delight and enthusiasm the news (Herald, Dec. 20) that Lake Nighthorse might be open this spring !
It does appear that the city has been undecided or confused about the services to be provided. It is a large venture, and the details have been confusing. In fact, I will be surprised if the city profits from it for some time. Although it occurs to me that some of those expenses can be relieved, and there could be even more benefits to the residents of Durango.
We all have noticed the increasing number of unfortunates gathering in the city for help, in many ways. Much of this cost is borne by the city, state, non-profit organizations and personal donors.
I propose those folks who are capable (even partially) and reliable be recruited hourly or daily. These folks can perform chores at the lake, which would ordinarily require minimum wage pay, in return for meals, shelter and other various needs.
Yes, transportation to Lake Nighthorse and supervision would need to be provided. They can earn small amounts of money or tokens to be traded in for food, lodging, medical needs, clothes, hygiene products, etc. They would be receiving support, helping them get back on their feet.
I believe that these temporarily challenged residents, and the community would profit immensely from such a venture. I feel it is a win-win situation.
