As we enter a new year, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the months ahead and considering how we want to show up in our community. This is a natural moment to think about impact, about the small and meaningful choices that shape the place we live. At Local First, we believe one of the most powerful ways to make a positive difference in the year ahead is by supporting locally owned businesses.
Supporting local is often thought of as a financial choice, and that part matters. When you shop locally owned businesses, more dollars stay in our community, supporting jobs, families and local services. But supporting local goes far beyond where we spend our money. It is a mindset and a practice that shows up in everyday actions.
Supporting local can be as simple as writing a positive online review after a great experience, sharing a recommendation with a friend, or choosing patience and kindness during a busy season. It can mean attending a community event, thanking a business owner for taking a risk, or learning the story behind a storefront you pass every day.
It is also civic participation. Supporting local includes voting in local elections, paying attention to policies that affect small businesses, and speaking up for the character and values we want our community to reflect. Local businesses are often the first to step up when a nonprofit needs support or when a neighbor is in need. They sponsor youth sports teams, donate to school fundraisers and create spaces where people connect.
Local businesses are not just places to shop or eat. They are gathering places, employers, mentors and creative hubs. They help define the culture of La Plata County. Without them, our community would look and feel very different.
At Local First, we work year round to advocate for locally owned businesses and to remind our community that small choices add up to lasting impact. One of the most powerful ways to support this work is by becoming a Local First member.
Local First members help fund programs that promote local businesses, educate consumers and advocate for policies that allow independent businesses to thrive. Membership is a way to turn intention into action and to say clearly that locally owned businesses matter to you.
As we step into a new year, consider making supporting local part of your routine. Shop local when you can. Share your positive experiences. Volunteer, vote and stay engaged. And if you are able, join Local First as a local member.
This resolution does not require perfection. It simply asks us to be thoughtful, connected and committed to the place we call home. When we support local businesses, we are investing in each other and in the future of our community.
