Academy eliminates Bayfield 6-1

Soccer season ends at state Sweet 16

Down 3-nil at halftime, Bayfield's girls couldn't extend their season into the 2015 Class 3A state tournament's quarterfinals as 3-seed Jefferson Academy pulled away in the second half last Saturday and protected its own pitch by a 6-1 margin.

Looking to build on the program's second-ever postseason win (1-0 over #19 Manitou Springs) the previous evening, the 14-seed Wolverines found crossing midfield much more difficult during their second match in Broomfield. Six different JA players found the back of sophomore Kailee Millard's net.

Freshman Lydia Larson's goal on May 8 was enough to eliminate Manitou Springs (9-7 overall.)

On Saturday, junior Maddy Duran cashed a 78th-minute throw-in from senior Andrea Zelinski to deny the Jaguars the satisfaction of a shutout.

But with time still remaining, Jefferson Academy sophomore Sam Longacre quickly answered with a goal off a Sara Dobbs' feed, ending what soph Sidney Toratti had begun with a Rachel Schlagel-assisted score in the 20th.

The Jaguars met #6 Greeley Frontier Academy (12-4) May 14 in the 'Great Eight.'

Having gone 10-2 in regular-season 3A/2A Southwestern League play, BHS finished 12-4 overall.
