Accident causes traffic delays on U.S. Highway 550 south

Head-on collision, no fatalities, near state line

A head-on collision with no fatalities caused traffic delays Saturday on U.S. Highway 550, 10 miles north of the Colorado-New Mexico border.

The occupants were able to extricate themselves from the vehicles, likely without serious injuries, according to preliminary reports from the Colorado State Patrol.

Two passengers, in a 2016 Dodge SUV with a New Mexico license plate, were transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center, said Cpl. Ivan Alvarado with state patrol. He did not have any further identifying or health status updates Saturday.

A 43-year-old man and 27-year-old woman were in the other vehicle, a 2008 Toyota SUV with a California license plate. They were not transported for further medical care.

Colorado State Patrol briefly closed both lanes of the highway Saturday afternoon before reopening traffic flow through one lane of the two lane road, Alvarado said.

Colorado State Patrol received reports of the accident at mile post 10 south of Durango at 3:55 p.m. Saturday. At least one vehicle rolled during the collision.
