It’s a good thing the Bayfield High School volleyball team wasn’t dealing blackjack.
The Wolverines would have lost a lot of money, turning up 20 aces in a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-9) win over Alamosa on Thursday in Bayfield.
“We had a really good goal of not missing any (serves),” BHS senior Tessa Powell, daughter of Bill and Elaine Powell, said. “It wasn’t just about getting it over; we wanted to ace them. We wanted to put it in holes to best suit our side.”
Powell dropped in two aces late in the third set, while Suzie Rhodes led the team with seven.
Maddi Foutz opened the second set with four aces in a six-point run before an error ended it.
“The kids put in thousands of reps (in practice) in competitive situations, and every day when they come in to serve there’s a different challenge,” BHS head coach Terene Foutz said.
The primary challenge for BHS (15-3, 7-0 Intermountain League) was overcoming the emotion of the pre-game senior night presentation and focusing on the match.
Foutz talked to her team about handling the situation during the week leading up to the match, and was grateful it occurred before the 15 minute warm up, which gave the Wolverines time to settle down.
Right-side hitter Jenna Sirios didn’t need it. She opened the first set with four out of her five kills and helped set the tone of the match early.
“I thought it would be harder, but my support here has been so great,” said Sirios, daughter of Bonny and Dug Sirios. “It was a relief to play the game.”
Kirstie Hillyer led BHS with 12 kills while also picking up six aces and a block.
The Wolverines didn’t stuff many balls for points, but their blockers intimidated Alamosa’s (6-14, 3-2 IML) hitters into errors and easier digs for their defenders.
“They don’t let anything hit the floor with their libero,” Alamosa head coach Amber Ullery said. “It’s amazing.”
BHS finished its home season 5-1.
The Wolverines will finish their regular season Thursday at Monte Vista looking to finish IML play a perfect 8-0 without dropping a set.
