Something needs to be done about illegal immigration, however, I’m not sure turning the United States into an armed castle with walls is the way to go. Reagan, the poster child for the GOP, once said, “Tear down this wall!” The GOP candidates may want to take a lesson from history when it comes to building walls.
One key reason that the pope brings Christianity into his remarks regarding immigration is that Trump, Cruz, Rubio, etc., make a point of pontificating that they are devout Christians and that we are a Christian nation. Therefore, the pope has every right to question their Christianity.
If the candidates refuse to leave their religious beliefs at the political door, then they leave themselves open to criticism when their words are anything but Christ-like. If any candidate brings up their religion and intends to inflict their religious beliefs on the nation then they better be prepared to always act accordingly. Being part-time Christians when it suits them makes them hypocrites.
Actually, it makes everyone out there who proclaims themselves to be Christian complete hypocrites if they support any action, regardless the reason that is anything but Christian.
Granted, depending on what version of the Bible you read, behaving like a Christian might mean treating others the way you would like to be treated, being kind, humble, turning the other cheek, or it could mean behaving like the Taliban, ISIS or any other terrorist organization that tries to take away the rights of women, advocates torture, capital punishment and war.
