Our children, grandchildren and all future generations require us to provide a livable planet for them. This is the most compelling issue of our times. I continue to be amazed at the acceptance by voters of those who would “greenwash” or ignore this issue.
Recently Chairman Montoya of the La Plata Electric Association board ranted about “special interest groups” promoting renewable projects that don’t benefit us all (Herald, Aug. 5). I am proud to be one of many who are working to create the political will for finding effective solutions to climate change. Those who ignore 97 percent of climate scientists who say we must resolve this issue are leading us on a very dangerous path.
In his letter, Montoya doesn’t mention LPEA members’ obligation to astronomical costs that will come as the coal era comes to an end. He doesn’t say that renewable energy is very cost competitive, but defends a monopolistic contract that requires us to buy coal-fired energy till 2050! He ignores the benefits of locally produced renewable energy that brings better health, jobs and increased revenues to our local economy.
We voters need to commit to solving climate change, and we need to vote those who ignore the truth out of office. We need your voices to bring this all-important issue to the forefront of the conversation if we are going to provide a livable planet to all future generations.
