Investigators believe they have found the rest of the human remains of a Pagosa Springs man whose body was found in August in a remote area east of the town.

Archuleta County Sheriff’s Office Undersheriff Tonya Hamilton said local agencies on Sept. 30 teamed with Colorado Forensic Canines to scour the area where some of 29-year-old Andrew Donald Chacon’s remains were initially found.

A crew of four dogs and eight handlers located more of Chacon’s remains, which should help investigators learn more details surrounding his death, Hamilton said.

Chacon’s remains were discovered Aug. 23 along Mill Creek Road, about six to eight miles from Colorado Highway 84, east of Pagosa Springs.

Last month, a coroner determined the most likely cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head, but it was unclear if it was self-inflicted or a result of foul play.

Investigators believe Chacon’s remains had been in the forest for at least a year. His family suspected he was missing, but they had not officially reported him as a missing person, authorities said.
