Affordable Care Act topic of talks

Health guide to speak in Durango

Six presentations about the Affordable Care Act by the San Juan Basin Health Department are scheduled this month. Three are in Durango, three in Bayfield.

Kevin O’Connor, a health-coverage guide for the Health Assistance Network at the health department, will discuss how people might be affected by health-care reform, changes in eligibility rules for private insurance, tax credits and Medicaid.

O’Connor said Friday his telephone hasn’t been overly busy since Tuesday, the first day people could enroll in a health plan. Plans go into effect Jan. 1.

“I’ve been receiving about 10 calls a day,” O’Connor said. “People were looking for information or wanting to set up an appointment to sit down with me.”

Elsewhere, there’s been a very heavy volume of calls, O’Connor said.

“That’s a good sign,” he said. “There have been glitches, but nothing major.”

O’Connor will speak at the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave., at 10 a.m. Oct. 14 and 19 and at 6 p.m. on Oct. 17.

He also will speak at Pine River Library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive, at 6 p.m. Oct. 22 and at 10 a.m. Oct. 23 and 26.

Renee Burch, a health-coverage guide at San Juan Basin Health Center in Pagosa Springs, will speak about the Affordable Care Act on Tuesday starting at 12:30 p.m. in the Ross Aragon Community Center, 451 Hot Springs Blvd. in Pagosa Springs.

Linda Gann, Western Slope outreach coordinator for Connect for Health Colorado, will be at the Business to Business Expo in the Pagosa Center for the Arts, 2313 Eagle Drive, in Pagosa Springs on Oct. 16. She will be available for comment during the expo, which runs from 11:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
