Al Harper deserves better than abuse

What an angry, hateful, untrue rant John Schrage sent to the Herald recently (June 23). Al Harper is one of the kindest, generous-to-a-fault men I have ever known. To say he is driven by greed is just wrong.

Pick up the brochure on the railroad and read No. 2 under his personal philosophy for running a good business. And they aren’t just words, he lives them. He contributes thousands of dollars every year to both Durango and Silverton, and has turned the train with its free museum into the centerpiece of our town and our lifeblood.

Don’t you think he and his family are sick over this fire? As we all are.

Blaming, spewing hate,= and demanding money is not helpful. This fire could have been started by anything and still may be. (A drunk discarding lit cigarettes on Florida Road, anyone?) Al is scrambling to do his best to find a way to operate the train safely. None of us need to hear you shout hateful things about such a good man.
