Alamosa may take pot questions to voters

ALAMOSA (AP) – The Alamosa City Council will hold a special meeting at 8 p.m. Wednesday to decide whether to refer ballot questions to voters on marijuana and council compensation.

Council will face resolutions that could, if all are approved, result in six separate ballot questions on pot and pot taxes for voters in November.

Some councilors and a majority of public comments at an Aug. 10 meeting favored the separation as a means of giving voters more choice.

Those six, as defined in state law, are medical marijuana dispensaries, retail marijuana stores, medical marijuana optional premises cultivation, retail pot cultivation, medical marijuana-infused products manufacturing and retail marijuana-infused products manufacturing.

The city has until Sept. 9 to finalize ballot questions.

City Council’s consideration of the ballot measures was prompted by a petition that would have placed a single question before city voters to legalize all types of marijuana facilities.

That petition did not include any of the escalated tax provisions for pot allowed by the state constitution.

Other towns in the San Luis Valley that are home to recreational pot stores include Antonito, Crestone, and San Luis, while the town of Blanca allows for recreational cultivation only.

Del Norte could join that list if voters approve a question in November that would legalize all forms of medical and recreational marijuana activities.

Unincorporated parts of Saguache and Costilla counties are home to medical and recreational dispensaries and grow facilities.
