Held to just one first-quarter point, and three for the entire first half, the Ignacio Bobcats' 2019 restart Saturday afternoon, Jan. 5, didn't go nearly as well as planned in a 40-22 loss at Alamosa.
"We did good defensively but our offense is struggling," head coach Justa Whitt said via text message during the squad's long ride home. "Partly, that is on me as I have been so focused on getting the defensive part of our game in order."
"We are holding our own against these bigger teams...keeping them to low score totals," she continued. "Now we have to focus on offense and how to become effective and who is going to step up and be consistent when it comes to scoring."
IHS (3-4, 2-0 2A/1A San Juan Basin) came alive after intermission and played the Mean Moose to a 19-19 draw in the third and fourth quarters, but the early damage was too much to overcome.
Senior post Sylvie Caton paced the victors with 13 points, while sophomore Terese Chavez scored eight and sisters Lily and Emily Lavier each netted six.
Ignacio's statistics hadn't been totalled up, but off the top of her head Whitt believed junior Larissa Gallegos to be her crew's high scorer with five points.
AHS improved to 5-3 overall and will begin 3A Intermountain action Friday, Jan. 11, at Bayfield (2-4). Tipoff time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
Ignacio, meanwhile, will attempt to remain unbeaten in SJBL play this weekend, with a visit from Norwood slated for Saturday, Jan. 12.
