By Mark Haeussler and Elizabeth von Tauffkirchen
We invite all members of our community to our first Bayfield Schools and Community Welcome Fair.
This event will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 21 at the Pine River Library.
The idea of it germinated from District Accountability and Advisory Committee meetings last spring to help bridge the schools into the community.
Instead of something right at back-to-school or something like a carnival, the idea evolved into an open-house type event and expanded to include community-wide resources.
This will allow parents and other members of the community to come learn and interact with resources that may be useful. The idea is an informal gathering so that people can get to know resources, ask questions, and so forth. We have a wide array of organizations being represented, from San Juan Basin Health to Scouts to music support organizations.
People also may be curious about ways that they can give back to the community and can ask questions about what that might look like (maybe they want to be on the accountability committee, or get involved tutoring at the school, or want to support a community-based organization). Free food will be sponsored by Alpine Leadership.
A partial list of organizations that will be participating include:
Bayfield Association for the Advancement of Music, Be FRANK, Boys & Girls Club, La Plata Social Services, Bayfield School counselors, coaches, music teachers, and more, Bayfield Early Education Program, Bayfield Education Foundation, Bayfield Marshal's Office, Friends of the Pine River Library, La Plata Independent Youth Performing Arts, La Plata Family Center Coalition, PTSA, Pine River Shares, Pine River Library, Pine River Garden Club, Pine River Rotary, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and more!
This event is being co-sponsored by the Pine River Library and the Bayfield School Advisory Committees, and we are grateful for the many organizations that have agreed to be available this day and for the library for providing a great location.
Mark Haussler is president of the Bayfield School District Advisory and Accountability Committee and Elizabeth von Tauffkirchen is digital services manager at Pine River Library.
