Amendment 74 is a giant boondoggle

Amendment 74 sounds innocuous, but it is a boondoggle waiting to happen that could bankrupt our city, county and state governments. If it passes, Amendment 74 will, for example, allow developers to sue if a local community’s building code doesn’t allow them to build a 10-story hotel in the middle of a historic downtown, or a mall of marijuana, or any number of other examples that would not be wanted by the city government or the people of Durango.

In allowing these lawsuits, 74 will siphon local taxpayer money from services that are needed and wanted by the taxpayers and give that money to attorneys and developers.

I want my local tax money to go toward the library, the police, snow-plowing, sidewalk repairs, transit, supporting nonprofits that are filling community needs, etc. Even if you disagree with how the city, county or state governments spend money, throwing away money on lawsuits is not the answer.

Amendment 74 has too many unintended consequences for it to be in the Colorado constitution.

Vote no on 74.
