I read with interest the article, Durango residents protest REI, urge shoppers to support local stores,” (Herald, Aug. 24) pertaining to the eight individuals protesting the opening of the new REI store in Durango.
Unspoken or referenced in the Herald article was the reality that REI has hired a number of Durango residents to work in the store. Further, unspoken was the REI contribution to the Durango tax base via property and sales tax.
I’m guessing Durango residents are capable of determining for themselves where their recreation dollars are best spent. It is a great opportunity for local businesses to up their game in ways we haven’t imagined.
Kroegers is a prime example of a local business thriving, in stark contrast to the Herald’s hand wringing for Kroeger’s fate when Home Depot came to town.
