And the West is History

100 years ago: Ed Howell, “who some time ago was conducting some kind of a search by lantern light,” was in Durango from Eureka for the holidays and to “visit with someone.”

75 years ago: Ross Pacheco of Marvel lost a horse during a tough fall and winter. An unusually high number of horses and cattle had died over a short period of time in that area.

50 years ago: Thomas T. Halley, who received a fatal head injury during an Aug. 29 Durango High School football practice, was named an honorary member of the Rocky Mountain News All-State football team.

25 years ago: Two women were treated at Mercy Medical Center following a two-vehicle collision on U.S. Highway 550. A 35-year-old Durango woman was driving southbound when she pulled into the shoulder of the road to make a U-turn and was struck by a vehicle being driven by a man from Houston, Texas.
