100 years ago: “Flag day is being generally observed in Durango by the display of ‘Old Glory’ from private and public buildings. Tonight the G.A.R. and Women’s Relief Corps will entertain the public with a suitable program in honor of the occasion.”
75 years ago: “Men died by the score in the old time west because of sheep. That four-legged wool-bearer was the cause of many a man’s death by violence. The old curse of violence still attaches to the woollies with perhaps the same fatal results. A 15 year old boy is today in a Durango hospital seriously wounded after an argument with another boy of the same age over a band of sheep. History, sadly enough, repeats itself.”
50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Allison-Arboles News: “Haying is rapidly becoming the order of the day in this area. Some of the hay that was down received a good soaking when the area received its first good rain of the season.”
25 years ago: “The oil and gas industry is willing to work in La Plata County under reasonable county regulations, but many area farmers and landowners oppose regulations of any kind, according to testimony given at the second planning commission public meeting on the proposed regulations.”
