100 years ago: “The La Platas are at present a scene of healthy activity. Old Parrott City is moving right along, the pack trains being kept busy transporting ore to the cars and merchandise and coal away from them.”
75 years ago: “Alfred Lawrenz is a very good fisherman too good, in fact. He wasn’t fishing for practice when he put seven shiny beauties of the trout species into his basket. The only trouble was that Lawrenz was perhaps confused on his dates and forgot that fishing season doesn’t open until May 28.” Lawrenz was fined $25 and sentenced to 10 days in jail.
50 years ago: “‘Rails, Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’s’ has been selected as the theme of the 1963 Spanish Trails Fiesta parade. The theme will take into consideration any aspect of the original construction of the narrow gauge line, any section of the history pertaining to the train, its present-day operation and any dreams for the future.”
25 years ago: “A ‘compromise’ plan for the intersection of Sixth Street and East Third Avenue has failed to appease residents of the historic boulevard. City officials, who earlier had proposed cutting into the tree-lined median for a left-turn lane, recommended a much smaller cut. But residents of the area say city officials should be considering ways to route traffic away from their neighborhood, rather than cutting into the treasured median to encourage traffic.”
